News & Updates: June 27, 2008
Most of you know the Nick Cave Fixes Blog has been up and running for six months. It is an entirely separate site devoted to the iconoclastic icon and is regularly updated. As for this site, there is a ton of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, solo Cave, Birthday Party, Blixa Bargeld, and Grinderman material spread over various pages. Click on Morgan’s Music Pages for the index. If you find a dead video link, or don’t see something you’d like to view, no worries. I’ve uploaded a huge number of Nick Cave vids to my VodPod collection, so check there, OR use the video player widget on the sidebar of this page. It’s a nifty gadget with <- arrows -> at the bottom allowing you to scroll through the 110 or so titles. Click the green button to view. A small screen opens and voila! Enjoy!
Read Dig, Nick Cave, Dig!!! , which includes early reports on the new CD plus a video link to Nick’s Australia Record Institute Awards [ARIA] Hall of Fame acceptance speech! A corker!
9-22-07 — Happy 50th Birthday wishes to Nick Cave!
“Where the Wild Roses Grow”- Nick Cave and Kylie Minoque, live on TOTP, 1996. A lackluster performance by both but worth watching. Nick is either really stoned or has something else on his mind (or both?)
“Little Janey’s Gone” - This not-so-great video was filmed by an audience member. Nick’s having a bit of trouble getting started, then finding the beat or staying on key (not sure of the date or venue).
“Do You Love Me?” - Nick Cave and Bad Seeds, Live in Berlin, 2001
“I Put a Spell on You” - a screaming, raving young Nick in 1984, when they called themselves ‘Nick Cave and the Cavemen’. Blixa is new to the band and wow, what an energy change!
“Suzanne” — Nick Cave sings the Leonard Cohen classic, from Cohen’s tribute film, I’m Your Man. Wonderful. This was on YouTube months ago, then it was taken down.
“Henry Lee”- Nick Cave and PJ Harvey Live (The White Room TV Show, UK, circa 1996). This is a new upload of a rare video and good quality. Note that they’re wearing the same pink, chipped nail polish. Oh, Nick.
“We Came Along This Road”- Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds (LIVE in Germany, 2001, God is in the House Tour)
“Oh My Lord” (LIVE in Germany 2001) (8:03 minutes)
Very crowded stage! Nick spends a lot of time stepping over and around his mic cord and almost snags Warren Ellis during a violin solo.
“I’m not going to tell you about a girl…” - Nick Cave’s inner thoughts as he proceeds to introduce “From Her…” to the carnival crowd.
The above clip is from Wim Wenders’ sublime Wings of Desire (German, 1987), a masterpiece of film art that cannot be compared to Hollywood’s overwrought remake, City of Angels (1998). Please see Wings of Desire. It might change your life.
“Fears Of Gun”- The Birthday Party (LIVE at Brixton Academy, 1982)
“The Mercy Seat” - Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds (LIVE on LA Radio, 3-3-1989, from The Road to God Knows Where)
Here’s “Wild World” (along with “Dead Joe”) a Birthday Party ‘Reunion’ between Nick and Roland Howard (London, 1992). Poor quality, but well worth watching!
“Where the Wild Roses Grow”- vocals by Nick Cave and Blixa Bargeld, for a wildly appreciative crowd at Germany’s Rockpalast Bizarre Fest (circa 1996).
FYI: Blixa originally sang the female role of this duet, which is featured on the boxed set, B-Sides and Rarities. Cave reportedly sent that demo tape to Kylie Minogue’s management, in hopes of sparking a collaboration with her. It worked. The rest is music history. Nick has said he hopes to reunite with her for another duet. Apparently, he is a genuine fan of her vocal capabilities and is proud of the fact that their relationship remained a professional one. What a gent!
“Mack the Knife” - on ‘September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill ‘ - Nick delivers a fantastically evil-grinned rendition of a classic.
The caption for this first pair of videos notes that it’s from the Songwriter’s Circle (1999). You can see John Cale and Chrissie Hynde sitting there. Just before Nick sits down at the piano, he appears to be wiping his nose, and says he had written it after visiting a country church in Surrey, where he was “skulking around in back, listening to the, what do you call him? The Vicar.” Emotionally wrenching, this video documents one of Cave’s best live renditions of the song:
“Into My Arms” - Nick on solo piano, Songwriter’s Circle, 1999
“The Ship Song” - Nick on solo piano, Songwriter’s Circle, 1999
“Bring it On”- terrific, electrically charged version, performed with Chris Bailey, live Hammersmith Apollo, London, 7th June 2003.
“There She Goes My Beautiful World” - live at Brixton Academy, 11th November 2004, this clip is from the Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus 4-disc LIVE DVD/CD. The vocal arrangements are flat-out amazing; Nick has never been in better form. Easily one of the best cuts on the DVD!
“Stagger Lee”- Live at the Brixton Academy, London, 11th November 2004 (this song follows ‘Beautiful World’ on the DVD; an utterly fabulous and theatrical rendition of a dirty old Bad Seeds favorite!)
“Love Letter”- a Late Night With David Letterman performance, from 2002, after the ‘No More Shall We Part’ CD’s release.
“The Weeping Song”- a TV performance, from around 1990. Blixa Bargeld looks especially fabulous - sad that he’s left The Bad Seeds. Great chemistry between the two men, as usual.
“The Mercy Seat”- stripped down, bare and raw, beautifully performed by Nick Cave and Mick Harvey, accompanied by the house band of a rare show that some of you will remember, called Nightmusic (that’s David Sanborn introducing).
“Hey, Joe”- another rare one, from Nightmusic, with Nick Cave on vocals, accompanied by David Sanborn, Toots Thieleman, and Charlie Haden. Unbelievable performances by all.
“Stagger Lee” - live on British TV, a must-see powerhouse of a performance (notice PJ Harvey, in the wings, watching her man whale on that vocal), circa 1996.
“Henry Lee” - very rare live performance, with PJ Harvey, same show, immediately after he did Stagger Lee (POOR QUALITY, SORRY)
“Brompton Oratory”- from The Boatman’s Call CD, a rare TV performance with Blixa Bargeld (not a favorite song, but going by the lyrics, he was hurting pretty bad after his breakup with PJ: ‘no god up in the sky or devil down below, could do the job that you did baby, in bringing me to my knees‘. Ouch.)

Hey Dirk,
I just posted videos from the Chicago show on July 27th at page top (see additions 7-31-07).
Not sure about the Grinderman set list. They are doing some Bad Seeds stuff, looks like. Which is okay - they are all Bad Seeds. :) Lucky you for being able to see NC and fiends. I guess I live in a crappy area for good shows.
You seem to have discovered Nick Cave and the rest of the bunch. Good on ya. Keep feeding me links. I have never seen that video of Nick covering Suzanne, but I can tell you that no one will cover that song better than Neil D.

Hey Kennybob,
I sure have discovered Nick Cave — that’s a major understatement. A Canadian guy turned me on to him by sending links to a forum I was on. That did it. Nick doesn’t do much self-promotion here in America. I think we’re quite low on his list of priorities. ‘S okay. We’re generally considered dunces by most intelligent folk in other countries, so I don’t hold it against him. At least he comes and shows his face occasionally.
Also, I don’t think Americans in general have much sense of World Music. The country is in an isolationist phase right now. Further, radio is very boring because few commercial stations play anything not on the corporate sponsored hit parades. Things are not quite as they were when I was in my 20s. Indy radio was all the rage, and sponsors were many. Thank goodness for free Internet radio. It’s a good thing.
So Neil Diamond’s version of Suzanne floats your boat? I like him, too. Hot August Night is a favorite album.
As for feeding you links, honey, I’ll give you all you can handle. Not much new out now, though.
